View Full Version : A - Z
New game :)
Choose a category - can be anything - sportsperson, place name, dog breed, birds, occupations etc.
Object is to go through the alphabet with each category and last one (Z person) to choose new category. Guess will be pretty difficult so in the case of nothing being available with the starting letter we could break the rules and post a word containing that letter.
Starting off with Desserts

Xerxes, Ruler of Persia
He invaded Greece in 480 BC.
The Spartans, who were in the middle of their festival. They know Persia is on its way, and so they send a force north under their king: Leonidas. There is a total of 5 or 6 thousand maximum, confronting an army several million strong (5.6 million according to Herodotus). When they arrive there is a wall across the road, which was designed to divide two cities. They decide to build it up in order to defend themselves from any frontal assault. The Persians send a spy forward to Thermopylae who sees some Spartans combing their hair which is surprising - this is reported back to Xerxes, and Demaratus reports this as the Spartan willingness to die as they are preparing themselves for a battle where they shall gloriously depart.
His armies were eventually beaten by the Greeks.

You're a good man, Charlie Brown
Based on Charles Schulz's Charlie Brown comic strips, this show is bright, fun, and adorable. You are shown glimpses of each of the characters- the old favorites: Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy, Sally, Minus, and Scorcher.

Zoo Story (Albee)
FWIW, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (the original -- not the most recent Broadway adaptation) was written by a fellow named Clark Gesner, one of the funniest, gentlest, most decent guys you would ever want to meet. I got to know him when I stage managed his "trunk musical", The Jello Is Always Red, off-Broadway in 1998. (http://www.ibdb.com/person.asp?ID=4858)
Clark was not happy with the 1999 Broadway version of Charlie Brown but there wasn't much he could do about it.
Clark Gesner died in a barber chair at the Princeton Club in New York three years ago next week and will be remembered by anyone who ever met him as true renaissance man, a good friend -- and a very, very funny man.
I leave the next category to someone else since I chose this most recent one. ;)

Maltese
The Maltese is a breed of toy dog known for its snowy white, luxuriantly long and silky coat, which owners often festoon with tiny bows or ribbon. It is named for the island of Malta, where it may have originated about 2,800 years ago. On the island of Malta this breed was a household pet of wealthy, cultured families. This probably accounts for their refinement, fidelity and cleanliness. This breed is one of the oldest European breeds.

XoloitzcuintliI.... Xolo (http://www.terrificpets.com/dog_breeds/Xoloitzcuintli.asp)
Description: The Xolo is a a sensitive breed of above average intelligence and devotion. He is protective, but will meet aggression, rather than instigate it, taking his cues from his master's uneasiness of a situation or person. He is still primitive to some degree and needs to be guided by reason and respect, rather than force of will. Though the Xolo is known as a hairless breed, litters often contain pups that are fully coated. Because the coated pups have traditionally been destroyed at birth, there is no standardization in coat color. This perhaps, has led breeders to believe that the coated pups are mixed breed puppies. A short course in genetics will disprove this belief. The coated Xolo has a short, course coat that sheds minimally. The coated Xolo is recognized by the UKC.

Well, I broke down and looked it up at dictionary.com:
Ecru - A grayish to pale yellow or light grayish-yellowish brown
[ French écru, raw, unbleached, from Old French escru : es-, intensive pref. (from Latin ex-. See ex-) + cru, raw (from Latin crdus. See kreu- in Indo-European Roots). ]
