I wanted to post a follow up for those of you who were interested in this thread before I let it fade away into retirement...

Success for the combination: Thunderbird/Grisoft AVG/F-Prot for DOS

I found an anti-virus software that can successfully scan the email storage folder for the Thunderbird email client. The good news is that it is free and highly rated. The not-so-good news is that it requires some work to set up and update.

F-Prot Antivirus for DOS (http://www.f-prot.com/download/home_user/)

You will notice from the link above that this is an anti-virus scanner for DOS. That is simultaneously a drawback for some, and a strength for others. The corresponding F-Prot Antivirus for Windows offers a free trial period, but I didn't test it. It may perform just as successfully as the command line version.

The success of F-Prot for DOS in scanning the Thunderbird email client's store folders may come as great news for Mozilla fans, because I didn't notice any anti-virus software that integrates with the email client (just a quick, casual search).

To repeat the idea from the threads I wrote that relate to this one: I was looking for an additional redundant method to scan incoming email for viruses. (Because a primary real-time scan engine could become disabled by a virus and rendered ineffective.)

I also wanted the implementation to be user friendly, because this added protection was targeted for less experienced computer users.

The batch file (actually a script) that I mentioned in the related threads will now provide the desired features. If there is sufficient interest I will return to this post and write up the methods for the set up.

(The actual scripting is trivially easy since I found a scan engine the could perform the work!) but writing up the procedure for setting everything up will definitely take me some time.
