1. Tabbrowser Extensions This is the ultimate extension. TBE controls every tab setting you could ever dream of. It allows you to lock the browser down so everything opens within the main Firefox window. It provides settings for tab bar location and size, as well as the behavior associated with each tab. You can control how every link click will be opened. If you prefer a new tab for every new link, it will do it. TBE also provides a "tab cache" so you can duplicate tabs (transferring the back/forward history), and if you accidentally close a tab, you can "undo" it. If you started using Firefox to take advantage of tabbed browsing, and you want total control of how your tabs work, then TBE is for you. The only complaint you will ever hear about TBE is that it can increase the initial Firefox loading time. This is by far the most complicated extension in the Firefox family, so a slight slowdown is to be expected, but it will not affect overall browsing speed. I rate it an 8.5/10 2. AdBlock Tired of annoying banner ads? Heck, are you just tired of useless and annoying images? Adblock is the answer. Just right-click on the picture, click "Adblock Image" and the image will be gone for good. This can greatly speed up page load times as once the ad is blocked, Firefox will never download the ad again! Adblock also allows for wildcards, so if you want to block all ads from doubleclick.net or Google AdSense (or any others), you can do so once and for all. Adblock's interface is very easy to use, and blocking an ad involves little more than a right-click. It also puts a link in the status bar that will pull up all blockable images on a site so you can scan through them all at once. Adblock is a must have for any user that hates banner ads. With its ease of use and flexibility, I give it a 9.5/10. 3. Sage Sage is Firefox's RSS reader. If you want an easy way to keep up with your RSS feeds without having to use a full RSS program, this is the answer. Sage builds a full-featured RSS reader into Firefox's sidebar. Sage is incredibly easy to setup, and can keep you up-to-date on your news while you continue to surf. Sage does lack some of the customization of a full RSS reader, and doesn't give you the option of saving feeds, but for basic RSS, you won't find anything better. I give it an 8/10. 4. Weatherfox Like to keep the forecast at your fingertips? Want to know if you'll need your umbrella? Forget Weather.com; get Weatherfox. Weatherfox displays the current temp/condition in Firefox's status bar, and you can also set it to display the forecast for the next couple days. It sits unobtrusively in the status bar, and can be set to pop-up the current conditions when you open the browser and at certain intervals. Weatherfox may not be essential to browsing, but it's a great extension. I give it an 8.5/10. 5. Firesomething Firesomething is the one of the strangest extensions ever written. Honestly, it isn't good for much of anything, but I have installed it every time I've installed Firefox. What Firesomething does is change the name of the browser in the title bar. So instead of running Mozilla Firefox, you might be running Mozilla Powerskunk, Spaceunicorn, or even Hyperkoala. It comes with a bunch of options pre-filled, but you can customize it to your liking. Firesomething does nothing more than put a smile on your face every time you open Superyak. It's always nice to smile! I give it a 10/10 6. IE View As great as Firefox is, there is still the occasional site that just won't work. Instead of having to open IE, then copy and paste the link, just right-click on the page, and click "View in IE." This will automatically open IE to the exact page you just viewed in Firefox. This is also extremely handy for web designers to check and make sure the website appears correctly in both browsers. As great as Firefox is, there are still times when this extension comes in handy. I give it a 9/10. There are hundreds of Firefox extensions, and I do use more than these 6, but these are the ones that I feel make this browser second to none! Most of these extensions can be downloaded from the Official Extension site, but for a complete list, visit The Extensions Mirror. |
